Getting Around in Paraguay

By Air

Domestic flights to towns in the interior are operated from Asuncion (Zorg en Hoop airfield) by Surinam Airways (PY). They also provide services from Asuncion to the Nieuw Nickerie district, and maintain a charter service.

Although internal flights are unreliable, they are the only way to reach a few remote places. Be prepared to travel light as personal baggage is subjected to a strict 9 lb/4 kg limit on flights using Twin Otter aircrafts.

By Sea/River

To visit the interior and some coastal areas, river transport is the least expensive and often most efficient option.

By Rail

There are currently no rail services in operation.

By Road

Traffic drives on the left. There is a reasonable, largely paved, road network with some potholes. Drivers using their own cars should make sure they carry a full set of spares.

There are services from the capital to most villages, with fixed routes at low prices. Buses tend to be very crowded and chaotic with loud music.

Car Rental

Available at the airport and in Asuncion through main hotels.

Documentation: International Driving Permit required.

Urban Transportation

In Paraguay, the buses are private. The drivers, however do follow routes that are collectively determined. The buses are somewhere between private taxis and public transportation, and only leave the “bus station” when they are totally full, meaning there are not specific schedules. If you do see a bus, take note that the buses are hand-painted.

Taxis are not metered, prices should be agreed before departure and tipping is not necessary. They can be hard to find after 10 pm and on Sundays or holidays.
